While the race for who will control the gavel in the U.S. House of Representatives continues to play itself out, Republican nominee U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who is at the moment short of the 218 votes required to clinch the Speaker race, has a top Alabama Republican backing his effort.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks), the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, has proposed any Republican who opposes McCarthy's speaker bid should be stripped of committee assignments.

According to a Politico report, the proposal drew backlash from U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) behind closed doors. However, also according to that report, Rogers has vowed that the Steering Committee would block McCarthy's opponents from getting committee assignments.

"I promised it," Rogers said.

Throughout the morning, Rogers was seen alongside McCarthy, who is still negotiating with the GOP holdouts apparently led by U.S. Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Scott Perry (R-Pa.) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.).

All of the Republicans, including U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), appeared to have backed McCarthy on the first ballot.
