Police recently arrested and charged a 19-year-old for the June murder of Darius Gunn, 27, of Montgomery.

Montgomery resident Zephaniah Lowery, 19, was identified in the shooting death of Gunn on June 18. Court records suggest Lowery shot Gunn while attempting to rob him.

The Montgomery Police Department and medics responded to the scene around midnight on June 18. Medics found Gunn on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head. They were unable to resuscitate Gunn, and he was pronounced dead on the scene. Witnesses told police that a person by the name “Zep” had committed the crime. Witnesses said “Zep” intended to steal Gunn’s iPhone and shoot him because Gunn was present at the stabbing of Lowrey’s sister.

Authorities later identified Lowrey as the “Zep” identified by witnesses and arrested him on Thursday. Lowrey is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility on capital murder charges. The capital designation comes due to the fact the shooting was committed in the process of a robbery. He is being held without bond.
