No. 15 Alabama opened the basketball season in Coleman Coliseum Monday night, rolling over North Dakota 91-62, making it 23 straight wins in season openers.

Alabama took care of business while showcasing its returning pieces as well as the new additions from recruiting and the transfer portal.

Here are a few takeaways from the season opener.

  1. Early Season Injuries

Three key players were unable to suit up for the season opener. Guards Aden Holloway and Latrell Wrightsell, Jr. and forward Keitenn Bristow were dealing with what head coach Nate Oats described as “minor injuries.” Oats graded all three of the injured players as day-to-day, but projected them to return on Saturday.

  1. Size Advantage

Alabama used its overwhelming size to its advantage against an undersized opponent. The Crimson Tide dominated the glass by a 46-26 margin, pulling down 11 offensive boards, leading to eight second-chance points. On the defensive side of the court, Alabama used its length to block seven shots.

  1. Philon Shines in Season Opener

Labaron Philon opted to return for his sophomore season and showed why he will be a key piece for this Crimson Tide offense. Philon started out hot with 15 first half points and finished with a career-high 22 points. To go along with his game-leading 22 points, Philon added three rebounds and eight assists.

  1. All-Around Allen

True freshman Amari Allen did a little bit of everything Monday night. Allen finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. On the defensive end of the court, Allen earned his fair share of blue-collar points with his aggressiveness when going for 50/50 balls. As a result, he finished with one block and three steals on defense.

Alabama will go on the road to face St. John’s Saturday, November 8, at 11 a.m. The game will be televised on FS1.
