Alabama kept its playoff hopes alive with a dominating 42-13 victory over LSU on Saturday.
The Crimson Tide used the legs of quarterback Jalen Milroe to propel their offense to a convincing victory over a top 15 LSU team and made their case for why they deserve to be in the playoffs.
Here are a few takeaways from the game.
Started Fast
Alabama coaches wanted to start fast to eliminate the crowd, and that is exactly what they did. The Crimson Tide received the opening kickoff and drove the ball down the field to take a 7-0 lead. Alabama finished the first quarter up 14-3 and went into halftime with a commanding 21-6 lead.
Running Backs in the Passing Game
Alabama utilized the running backs in the passing game, and it was highly successful. Jam Miller caught five passes for 50 yards, which was crucial in spreading out the LSU defense. Justice Haynes also caught one pass for nine yards to add to the total of 60 yards receiving from the running backs.
Penalties
Penalties have been a problem for Alabama this season, especially on the road. Saturday in a rowdy environment, Alabama did a great job limiting the penalties on the road. The Crimson Tide were flagged seven times for 74 yards. While the 74 yards may seem like a lot, 29 of the 74 occurred once the game was out of reach.
Milroe Runs Wild
The success of Alabama’s offense usually relies on Milroe's legs, and he showed up on Saturday. Milroe rushed the ball 12 times for a career-high 185 yards and four touchdowns. LSU had no answer for Milroe's rushing attack while he averaged 15.4 yards per carry with a long of 72 yards.
Secondary Steps Up
The Alabama secondary had their hands full facing an explosive passing attack from LSU. The Crimson Tide secondary held the LSU passing attack to just 239 yards passing while picking off Garrett Nussmeier twice. Alabama limited Nussmeier to just a 64 completion percentage on the night.
The Crimson Tide will face Mercer at Bryant-Denny Stadium on November 16 at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be streaming on ESPN+/SEC Network+.
