Alabama continued the momentum from last week to Saturday and got its second win of the season, taking care of Wisconsin 38-14.
Saturday’s win was the 84th straight win over non-ranked opponents in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Both the offense and defense came out of the gate hot, setting the tone for what would be a blowout win for the Crimson Tide.
Here are a few takeaways from the game.
- Welcome Back, Ryan Williams!
Until Saturday, Ryan Williams had been relatively quiet. In his first game back after suffering a concussion, Williams bounced back in a big way. For the first time since last year’s game against Georgia, the talented receiver eclipsed the century mark in receiving yards. Williams finished the game with five catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Williams dropped what would have been a third touchdown in the fourth quarter.
- Simpson Stays Hot
There is no doubt who the starting quarterback for Alabama is this season. Coming off a perfect passing day last week, Ty Simpson stayed hot against Wisconsin. Simpson completed 24 of 29 passes for 382 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. Simpson also rushed the ball six times for 25 yards. Simpson’s numbers could have been even more impressive if it weren’t for a couple of dropped balls by wide-open receivers.
- Run Game Struggles
Once again, Alabama struggled to get the ground game going. The Alabama running back room is loaded with five-star talent, but in the absence of Jam Miller, no Crimson Tide running back has stepped up to fill the void in the backfield. Simpson led all rushers with 25 yards on six carries. Germie Bernard recorded the only rushing touchdown from the receiver position.
- Bernard Stays Consistent
For the second week in a row, Germie Bernard scored two first-half touchdowns. Anytime Alabama needs to throw for a first down, Bernard seems to be on the other end of a Simpson pass. Williams might be the bigger home-run threat out of the two receivers, but Bernard has been the most consistent. Bernard finished the day with four catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. He also added a two-yard rushing touchdown.
- Pass Rush Gets Home
Alabama was held to just one sack in its first two games of the season. On Saturday, Kane Wommack dialed up more blitzes than usual, putting the pressure on a young backup quarterback for Wisconsin. The Crimson Tide finished with four sacks and three hurries on the day, keeping the opposing quarterback uncomfortable the entire game.
Alabama will be on a bye week next week before opening up SEC play against Georgia on September 27.
