On Tuesday, President Donald Trump gave his first State of the Union address since taking office for his second term.
In his nearly two-hour speech, Trump largely touched on the economy, the effort to combat illegal immigration, foreign affairs, and honored some of the nation's heroes.
In one noteworthy moment, the President said that the duty of the American government was to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens, and invited those in the chamber who agreed to stand up. Notably, the Democrats remained seated, which not only drew Trump's ire but also that of Alabama's Republican federal lawmakers.
In a post to his gubernatorial campaign's X account, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) called it "a damn shame" that Democrats refused to stand in agreement.
"It is a damn shame that Democrats didn’t stand up when President Trump asked who agrees with this simple statement… 'The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens,'" he declared. "This is COMMON SENSE."
U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) wrote, "[Trump] is spot on—our duty is to protect Americans, NOT illegal aliens. Democrats apparently STILL have not gotten that memo."
U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) thanked the President for "standing for the truth."
“'The purpose of government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.' Thank you for always standing for the truth," he posted on X.
In response to Trump's declaration, U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) simply posted an American flag emoji.
