U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is fighting to limit the power and influence of an Islamist organization pushing for a complete theological and societal overhaul in the United States based on Sharia law.
On Monday, the lawmaker announced his cosponsorship of legislation requiring President Donald Trump to designate the entire Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization, while also directing the U.S. Secretary of State to submit a report to Congress regarding the designation no later than 90 days after the enactment of the bill.
"The Muslim Brotherhood is against everything this country stands for," Tuberville said. "I have been sounding the alarm for months now about the danger that radical Islam poses to our sovereign nation. Designating this evil group as a terrorist organization is a great step towards eradicating Islamic extremism from our country."
In November 2025, Trump signed an executive order beginning the process of formally designating certain chapters of the organization as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists.
"The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, has developed into a transnational network with chapters across the Middle East and beyond," the EO reads. "Relevant here, its chapters in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt engage in or facilitate and support violence and destabilization campaigns that harm their own regions, United States citizens, and United States interests.
Tuberville was joined by U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) in cosponsoring the legislation.
U.S. Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart (R-Fla.) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.
