U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) harshly criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and the Democratic Party for forcing a government shutdown on Wednesday, despite Republican warnings about its potential impact on everyday Americans.

During an appearance on Newsmax's "National Report," the lawmaker asserted that the "far left wing" has taken control of the Democratic agenda, leading to ill-advised stunts like the shutdown. She particularly took issue with Democrat demands for a $1.5 trillion liberal "wish list" to keep the government open.

"They know this was not the right decision, and eventually I believe they will come to their senses and we can work to come together to do the work of the American people," Britt said.

She then pointed out Schumer's abysmal record when in charge of the Senate, comparing it to the progress now being made under Republican leadership.

"We passed three bills on the Senate floor for the first time — this is before the August state work period — for the first time since 2018," Britt, a member of both the Senate Appropriations and Judiciary committees, said. "Do you know how many bills we passed in the entirety of Chuck Schumer's last fiscal year, that he was the leader? It's zero."

"This is not a failed negotiation," she continued. "This is a CR that Senate Democrats voted for 13 times under President Biden. The only difference we have right now is who's in the Oval Office."

Britt believes that ultimately, the government will reopen when Democrats return to reality.

"It's a sad day for America," she said. "But we're going to keep working. We're going to put those votes on the floor. And eventually I think we have enough pragmatic, common-sense people that will keep the will of the government and open it again."
