During an appearance on Newsmax TV over the weekend, U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) responded to a recent poll showing only a minority of Democrats are proud of America, compared to Republicans.
The PRRI poll showed that 82% of Republican respondents said they were “extremely or very proud” to be American, while just 31% of Democrats said the same.
Aderholt said Americans had much to be proud of, regardless of political leanings, especially during the country's 250th birthday.

“This should be a time when all Americans — Democrat, Republican, independent, whatever party you're associated with — should be very excited about where we have come over the last 250 years,” Aderholt told Newsmax’s “Saturday Agenda.” “We're not a perfect nation, but we are a light on a hill. We're a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. There's no place on earth that's going to be perfect. But I will tell you, I'd rather be in the United States than any other country I know of, to be a citizen of this country."
Aderholt is a member of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, which was established by Congress in 2016 “to plan and orchestrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.”
“We recognize in this country that we are one nation under God, and our founding fathers recognized that,” Aderholt continued. “We were not just some document that came out. We were born of our creator or we were created by our one God. That is who we recognize in this country. And I think that's why we've had this success that we have over the last 250 years.”
Aderholt recounted how, during the bicentennial celebration 50 years ago, America was a much more united country.
“In 1976, I remember nothing about any division in this country,” he said. “I remember us all coming together. And that's what my hope is for next Saturday, but also for the rest of this year as we celebrate the semiquincentennial, America's 250th birthday, because we were birthed as a nation on July the 4th, 1776.”
