On Tuesday, multiple media outlets confirmed Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall will not seek the governor's office in 2026.
Marshall's decision clears the way for a potential showdown between Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth and U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), both of who have been discussed as possible frontrunner candidates should they seek the state's top job.
However, Marshall's long-anticipated decision was made public by Alabama Daily News publisher Todd Stacy's Inside Alabama Politics newsletter and later confirmed by the Associated Press.
"Definitely not running for governor. Tammy and I talked a lot over the year and then made the decision over Thanksgiving that it just didn't seem to be a good next step for us," Marshall said to the AP.
Should Marshall, who assumed the AG role in February 2017 on an interim basis to fill the unexpired term of Luther Strange, fulfill the entirety of his current term that ends on January 18, 2027, he will be the longest consecutive-serving AG in Alabama history.
