Lieutenant Gov. Will Ainsworth slammed a recent ruling by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) that said student-athletes who transfer using financial assistance from the state's new CHOOSE Act school choice law will be required to sit out for one year before competing in athletics.
The 2024 law provides up to $7,000 to a participating student in an education savings account to be used for tuition, fees, and other education expenses. The 2025-2026 academic year is the first year the school program is available to students.
“The same Alabama High School Athletic Association responsible for making sure teams do not break the rules is BREAKING THE LAW by denying eligibility to CHOOSE Act students. I'll offer legislation to strip AHSAA of its power and give it to an entity that will follow the law,” Ainsworth said on X on Thursday.

The AHSAA ruling has also been criticized by Governor Kay Ivey and multiple state lawmakers.
