Congressional candidate Tom Holmes is temporarily suspending his campaign following the death of his son, according to Lagniappe.

Tom Holmes, a Democrat from Mobile, is running against Republican U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) for congressional district one.

His son, Thomas B. Holmes, II, also known as “T-Tom,” passed away with complications from heart failure on August 29. According to his obituary, he was a descendant of Dr. Thomas Galphin Holmes, a survivor of the Aug. 30, 1813, Fort Mims Massacre in Baldwin County.

A celebration of life is planned for Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Mobile. A funeral and burial will follow at Montgomery Hill Baptist Church.

Former governor Fob James is listed as an honorary pallbearer.

Tom Holmes previously worked under James’ Republican administration as the chief of science and technology for the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. He has also held various positions as an advocate for Alabamians and Americans with developmental disabilities. According to his campaign website, he currently serves the city of Mobile as a public policy advocate.

Holmes will resume his campaign the first week of October.

Alabama’s 1st district includes all or part of Baldwin, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Escambia, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Mobile Counties.

Neither Moore nor Holmes is the incumbent for District 1. U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) lost the Republican primary to Moore after redistricting forced them to run against each other.

The general election will be November 5.
