Alabama dropped its first midweek contest of the 2026 season on Tuesday night, falling 14–4 to No. 12 Southern Miss by way of the mercy rule in the eighth inning. The loss dropped the Crimson Tide to 7–2 on the season, ending Alabama’s seven-game winning streak.
The Crimson Tide jumped on the board first, plating two runs in the first inning by way of a Jason Torres sacrifice fly and a Luke Vaughn RBI single. Southern Mississippi responded with one run in the first and four more in the second, taking a 5-2 lead and never looking back.
A two-run home run from Vaughn in the top of the fourth pulled the Crimson Tide within one, but a seven-run bottom half of the inning from the Golden Eagles blew the game wide open. Southern Mississippi tacked on a run in the seventh and eighth innings to enforce the run rule on the Crimson Tide.
Pitcher JT Blackwood suffered his first loss of the season for Alabama, giving up five earned runs on six hits in just two innings of work.
Catcher Luke Vaughn was the lone offensive highlight for Alabama in the defeat. Vaughn finished the night 2-for-3 with three RBI, a home run, and a run scored.
Alabama will participate in the Frisco College Baseball Classic this weekend with games against Iowa, #19 Oregon State, and Houston beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
