During Sunday's broadcast of ABC 33/40's 10 p.m. evening news, Alabama Democratic Party chairman Randy Kelley ascribed motives to President Donald Trump's decision to green-light bombing strikes on select targets within Iran.

On Saturday, Trump announced strikes on facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan on his Truth Social social media platform.

Kelley told ABC 33/40 that Trump's decision was meant to be a "distraction" from his policies.

"They're concerned that he didn't get approval from Congress. And so that's what I'm saying, that the man probably had some nefarious [intention] based on his track record — nefarious intentions with bombing Iran," Kelley said to ABC 33/40's Austin Pratt.

"An unnecessary war, and a war that's a distraction from his unpopular policies," he added. "That's all that would be — just a war to keep people's minds off the damage that he has done to the demands of the people in the short time he has been in office."
