The Alabama Democratic Party opened campaign qualifying on Monday and already 56 candidates have qualified for public office in the upcoming 2022 election.

Enterprise businessman Chad "Chig" Martin has qualified to run for the Democratic nomination for governor.  Martin ran as an independent in 2018 but could not get ballot access, so he ran as a write-in candidate.

"You cannot win if you do not have ballot access," Martin said. "I now have ballot access."

Yolanda Rochelle Foster also has qualified to run for governor in the Democratic primary.

State Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton (D-Greensboro) qualified to run for Senate District 24 (SD24).

State Rep. Merika Coleman (D-Birmingham) qualified to run for the State Senate in SD19. Incumbent Sen. Priscilla Dunn (D-Bessemer) is in failing health and will not run again.

Lisa Ward of Lakeview qualified to run for SD21. SD21 is currently held by State Sen. Gerald Allen (R-Tuscaloosa).

There are 35 State Senate Districts. 

Incumbent State Rep. Barbara Boyd of Anniston qualified to run for another term in House District 32 (HD32).

Incumbent State Rep. John Rogers of Birmingham qualified to run for another term in HD52.

Incumbent State Rep. Mary Moore of Birmingham qualified to run for another term in HD59.

Incumbent State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (Birmingham) qualified to run for another term in HD60.

Nina Taylor is challenging Givan in HD60.

Larine Irby Pettway is qualified to run for HD67. HD67 is currently represented by Prince Chestnut (D-Selma).

Incumbent State Rep. Patrice "Penni" McClammy (Montgomery) qualified to run for another term in HD76. McClammy is the newest member of the House, having just won a special election for the seat formerly held by her late father.

Former State Rep. Johnny Ford (Tuskegee) qualified to run in HD82. HD82 is currently represented by Pebblin Warren (D-Tuskegee).

Incumbent State Rep. Berry Forte (Eufaula) qualified to run in HD84.

Richard Brackner qualified to run for State Representative in HD95. Incumbent Rep. Steve McMillan (R-Gulf Shores) is retiring.

Incumbent State Rep. Adline Clarke (Mobile) qualified to run in HD97.

Incumbent State Rep. Sam Jones (Mobile) qualified to run in HD99.

Incumbent State Rep. Barbara Drummond (Mobile) qualified to run in HD103.

There are 105 State House districts in Alabama.

Alabama is one of the few states to elect all of its judges in partisan political races.

  • Anne L. Durward is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 1.

  • Javan Joielle Patton is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 4.

  • Brendette Brown Green is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 11.

  • Paul Rand is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 14.

  • Elisabeth French is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 17.

  • David J. Hobdy is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 19.

  • Tamara Harris Johnson is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 22.

  • Carla V. Morton is running for Circuit Court Judge in the          10th Judicial Circuit place 23.

  • Stephen Wallace is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 24.

  • Michael Streety is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 10th Judicial Circuit place 26.

  • Greg Griffin is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit place 1.

  • Sebrina Martin is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit place 3.

  • Zachary T. Collins, Sr. is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 26th Judicial Circuit place 2.

  • Don McMillan is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 4th Judicial Circuit place 2.

  • Marvin Wayne Wiggins is running for Circuit Court Judge in the 4th Judicial Circuit place 3.

Danny Carr qualified to seek reelection as District Attorney for the 10th Judicial Circuit. The 10th is in Jefferson County.   

Lynneice Washington qualified to run for District Attorney in the 10th Judicial Circuit/Bessemer Cutoff.     

Daryl Bailey qualified to run for District Attorney in the 15th Judicial Circuit.      

Richard "Rick" Chancey qualified to run for District Attorney in the 26th Judicial Circuit.   

There are 41 Circuit Courts in the Alabama Judicial System and have jurisdictions that consist of one or more counties. District Courts are the lower courts in Alabama and typically handle less serious cases – though there are instances in Alabama where district court judges are given circuit court emergency powers by the presiding circuit court judge. There are 67 district courts in Alabama, one for each county.

  • Shera Craig Grant qualified to run for District Court Judge in Jefferson County place 5.

  • Kathy-Ann Marcia Alexis qualified to run for District Court Judge in Jefferson County Place 10.

  • Jamie Graham qualified to run for District Court Judge in Russell County place 1.

  • Walter L. Gray, III qualified to run for District Court Judge in Russell County place 2.

Democratic primary voters also elect many of the members of the State Democratic Executive Committee and they will appear on the bottom of the ballot in the primary if there are contested seats. The State Democratic Executive Committee (like the Alabama Republican Executive Committee) is not an official government position and pays no salary.

  • William L Krause qualified to run for SDEC District 22.

  • Susan McKenney qualified to run for SDEC 27.

  • Colten Robertson qualified to run for SDEC 3

  • Martha Dawson qualified to run for SDEC 49.

  • Bill Dawson qualified to run for SDEC 47.

  • Julia Juarez qualified to run for SDEC 54

  • Alicia Spomer qualified to run for SDEC 64.

  • Chrissie Hines qualified to run for SDEC 94.

  • Ben Harris qualified to run for SDEC 097.

  • Joshua Brown qualified to run for SDEC 102 Male

Democratic qualifying will remain open through Jan. 28. There is a fee to qualify for office. Contact the Alabama Democratic Party to qualify or for more details. Republican qualifying will not open until Jan. 4.

The Democratic primary is on May 24, 2022.
