FOLEY — Local Democratic parties gathered Tuesday to watch the debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Alabama Democratic Party live-streamed to several watch parties across the state, including Jefferson, Shelby, Baldwin and Covington Counties.
Democrats in Baldwin County, including the North Baldwin, South Baldwin and Eastern Shore groups, watched the debate from Gelato Joe's in Foley. The group of around 30 people cheered for reproductive rights and laughed at Trump's denial of Project 2025 and his concerns over immigration policy under the Biden-Harris administration.
Harris supporters wore Harris-Walz shirts and cat shirts in protest of Trump vice presidential running mate JD Vance's "childless cat lady" comment, which he has said was a sarcastic comment that has been widely misinterpreted.
The crowd became the most vocal when reproductive rights were mentioned. Women, including a local female pastor and a South Baldwin family medicine doctor, clapped and cheered when Harris claimed that "nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion."
The Democrat attendees also voiced support for a federal law allowing abortion, for windmills, and for "democracy," while they scoffed at Trump's claims that Harris was a Marxist trying to win by copying from his playbook.
At the end of the debate, Baldwin County Democrats felt their candidate, Harris, had won and were hopeful she could win the election.
