Randy Kelley, chairman of the Alabama Democrat Party, announced recently that the State Democrat Executive Committee (SDEC) will meet in Montgomery on August 8.
According to Kelley, the purpose of the meeting is to reorganize the SDEC for the next four years.
Democrats will fill vacancies, which include 11 district vacancies that were not filled during the May 19 Democratic primary election. The district vacancies are District 6 female, District 30 male, District 33 female, District 39 male and female, District 44 female, District 50 female, District 61 male, District 80 female, District 88 male, District 93 female.
The SDEC will also elect a chair, general vice-chair, secretary, constituency vice chairs to include vice chair of minority affairs, vice chair of county affairs, vice chair of labor, and vice chair of youth. Pursuant to the bylaws, the treasurer will be appointed by the newly elected chair upon taking office.
The meeting will be interesting due to the ongoing rift in leadership among Alabama Democrats. Vice chair Tabitha Isner has critiqued Alabama Democrat Conference chairman Joe Reed for allegedly not following campaign finance law.
"Any organization that endorses candidates and spends money to persuade voters to support particular candidates is engaged in 'electioneering.' That organization must register with the state and report its expenditures to the Alabama FCPA. Guess who's engaged in electioneering but not reporting any expenditures to the FCPA?" she wrote in a post with an official guide ballot including photos of Reed and Talladega County chairman Kelvin Cunningham for the May 19 Democrat primary.
Isner also called for Democrats to vote in the upcoming August 11 Republican special congressional primary.
