The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) won’t replace Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds stolen after December 21 due to Congressional authorization expiring.

DHR said earlier in December they were receiving an increasing number of fraud reports throughout the state related to SNAP benefits stolen from households impacted by EBT card skimming, cloning and similar fraud.

“Effective Saturday, December 21, 2024, the Congressional authorization for replacement of stolen SNAP benefits expired. The replacement of these benefits was limited to thefts occurring between October 1, 2022 and December 20, 2024,” a DHR spokesperson said on Monday. “Therefore, the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) cannot process affidavits with thefts occurring on or after Saturday, December 21. Alabama DHR will continue to process affidavits of theft for incidents that occurred on or prior to December 20, 2024, from households impacted by EBT card skimming, cloning, and similar fraud.”
