There's no evidence Birmingham Water Works Board chair Tereshia Huffman violated the Alabama Ethics Act, according to Alabama Ethics Commission assistant general counsel Brian Paterson.

An ethics complaint filed on Monday alleged that Huffman "participated in unethical practices" by using contributions from the board's Community Educational Program to support charities affiliated with her relatives.

Paterson said in a letter to Huffman on Friday, obtained by 1819 News, that they were closing her case file.

"A complaint was filed against you alleging that you violated the provisions of the Alabama Ethics Law. The complaint was reviewed by Director Albritton and legal staff. After a review of the information provided in the complaint, we have determined that there is no evidence on the face of the complaint that would constitute a violation of the Ethics Act. Because our jurisdiction is not invoked, we are closing our file in this matter," Paterson said in the letter.

Legislation to change the makeup of the Birmingham Water Works Board passed the Senate on Thursday and is now in the House for their consideration.
