With less than three weeks until the season opener against Florida State, Alabama has yet to name a starting quarterback. However, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, that spot is expected to go toTy Simpson, with an announcement coming soon.
Simpson, a former five-star recruit, has been the favorite to take over the starting quarterback position ever since Jalen Milroe left for the NFL draft. Back in April, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb claimed that Simpson would start if the season began that day. Head coach Kalen DeBoer also echoed those beliefs during summer workouts.
It was a three-way battle for the starting quarterback position between sophomore Austin Mack and highly touted five-star freshman Keelon Russell during the offseason before Simpson put separation between the other two quarterbacks.
While having zero starts to his name, Simpson has the experience advantage over the other two candidates, serving as a backup in his first three years at Alabama. Simpson made appearances in 16 games over his career, completing 29 passes for 381 yards. On the ground, Simpson carried the ball 22 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns. After losing the quarterback competition for the second time to Milroe last season, Simpson remained loyal to the Alabama program and decided not to transfer out. In his fourth year with the Crimson Tide, his patience has finally paid off.
Alabama will open the season on the road against Florida State on August 30 at 2:30 p.m. with Simpson at starting quarterback. The game will be televised on ABC.
