Faith leaders across America have joined in a letter to President Donald Trump, asking him to stop the mail-order distribution of abortion-inducing drugs.
Three Alabama leaders joined the plea: Dr. Rick Lance, executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, Greg Davis, president of Alabama Citizens Action Program (ALCAP), Dr. Craig Carlisle, president of Alabama Baptist State Convention.
A statement put out by ALCAP explained the issue:
Abortion has almost always been an act done in the shadows. Whether behind the closed doors of an abortion clinic, or in a quiet apartment as a young woman takes an abortion pill, millions of innocent lives have been quietly snuffed out. In the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned, this scenario of abortion pills being used has become all the more common and states have been limited in what actions they can take. This is despite the fact that over 60% of all abortions now occur through abortion pills coming through the mail.
But, there are solutions for the federal government to help address this growing issue. In a recent joint letter (click here for link) headed up by the Family Research Council and delivered to President Donald Trump, ALCAP’s Greg Davis and over 40 other Christian leaders from across the country urged President Trump to direct the FDA to enforce stronger protections from the dangers that the abortion pill presents to women.
This significant step could help implement sound protections. This includes pre-prescription ultrasound requirements and the reevaluation of the FDA’s approval of the drug in light of the damage that it has caused for so many women and innocent unborn lives.
In addition, the letter references the power of the Justice Department under the Comstock Act to help protect states’ rights to enforce their abortion pill laws. Since many of these pills are coming from pro-abortion states into pro-life states like Alabama, this becomes a interstate issue with Federal jurisdiction and states need the Federal government to step in and allow states to uphold their state-level protections. This is essential for Alabama’s citizens to be properly represented through the pro-life laws that the people’s elected State Legislature passed.
Though the pro-life movement achieved a monumental victory in the overturning of Roe, there remains much work to be done. Addressing the massive influx of abortion pills is a key way to continue the work.
