We are just a few days away from game week for the season opener against Florida State, and Alabama football has selected four players to serve as team captains for the 2025 season.
Thursday morning, the university's NIL collective, Yea Alabama, released the names of the team captains voted by their teammates. The four players are recently named starting quarterback redshirt junior quarterback Ty Simpson, redshirt junior center Parker Brailsford, redshirt senior defensive tackle Tim Keenan III and redshirt senior linebacker Deontae Lawson, who is a returning captain.
Despite only being named the starting quarterback earlier this month, Simpson will extend the streak of an Alabama quarterback being a team captain to seven years. Simpson joins the elite company of Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones, Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe. Young and Milroe both served as captains for two years each.
Simpson’s teammates have already taken notice of his leadership qualities since winning the starting job. In an interview after a bad practice, starting offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor described a moment in which Simpson showed his leadership.
"He just got fired up after practice," Proctor said. “We didn't, obviously, have up to the standard the best practice ever today, so he got on us, and that's the type of leadership that you have to have."
Brailsford will be Simpson’s right-hand man, delivering the snaps to him this season. This is his second year for the Crimson Tide after transferring from Washington to follow his head coach, Kalen DeBoer.
Keenan, one of Alabama’s three SEC Media Day attendees, saw his playing time significantly increase last season as he played in all 13 games, making starts in 12 of them. The defensive lineman recorded 40 tackles and 2.5 sacks at nose tackle. Like Lawson, Keenan decided to skip entering the NFL Draft to return for a fifth season with the Crimson Tide.
Lawson, the only returning team captain for the 2025 season, had the opportunity to enter the NFL Draft after last season but chose to return for his fifth season with the Crimson Tide after a knee injury cut his 2024 season short. Recording over 20 starts in his career for Alabama, the leader and quarterback of the Alabama defense tallied 76 tackles last season to finish second on the team despite missing the final two games.
In addition to participating in the coin toss for each game, Alabama’s four team captains will have their hand and cleat prints cemented in concrete during a ceremony outside Denny Chimes in April 2026.
