MONTGOMERY — On Tuesday evening, the Alabama House of Representatives passed legislation renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America."
Sponsored by State Rep. David Standridge (R-Hayden), House Bill 2 would also require all state, local entities and their employees to observe and implement the name change where practicable. The legislation aligns with President Donald Trump's January 2025 executive order renaming the Gulf.
"Our neighbor in Florida has officially changed it to the Gulf of America," explained Standridge. "Louisiana is using the Gulf of America, another Gulf state, and it’s known by major companies. It’s known by the mapping software, and I think that we need to also make that change here.”
"The name better reflects what this gulf, this body of water means to our country. We protect it, we use it more than any other country," added Standridge.
HB 2 now goes to the Senate.
