MONTGOMERY — The last portrait of the Alabama House of Representatives in the current Alabama State House was taken on Thursday.
Members lined up to take the photo, which will likely be displayed in the new Alabama State House.
The Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) is contracted to build the new State House. It is located behind the old State House.
The old State House will be leveled and replaced with green space.
Clay Redden, public information officer for the House of Representatives, said the current building was only meant to be temporary when the legislature moved in back in 1985.
“This was the highway department building,” Redden said. “It was all supposed to be temporary. After the capital was renovated, we were supposed to go back across the street and conduct business in the old House Chamber and the old State Capitol, but the membership decided, no, they didn't want to go back across the street because they had something they had here they didn't have across the street. They had individual offices.”
Redden said that lawmakers will have their own offices at the new State House.
