The Alabama Port Authority Police Department opened a criminal investigation into possible theft at the McDuffie Coal Terminal.

The Authority has fired four employees in connection with the investigation and handed over information to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office.

Chief development officer Maggie Oliver told 1819 News that as a result of the internal investigation, misconduct was discovered.

“We are committed to the highest standards of integrity and accountability, and we take swift and appropriate action when those standards are violated,” stated director and CEO Doug Otto. “The Port Authority exists to serve the State of Alabama and its citizens, and protecting the public trust is key to our mission.”

Since February 4, four McDuffie employees have been terminated. The Finance Committee approved modifications to the Authority’s procurement policy, which will be presented to the full board on February 24.

Otto authorized a third party to provide accounting services and to conduct an independent review of the updated procurement policy.

“This is a serious matter, and we are treating it as such,” said Otto. “Engaging an independent firm ensures we are conducting a thorough and objective review of the facts while also strengthening our policies. We are committed to identifying any weaknesses, addressing them directly, and reinforcing accountability at every level of the organization.”

Otto added that the Authority is focused on protecting public resources.
