Alabama’s congressional delegation met with officials from the Alabama Port Authority to hear about ongoing projects and review what has been done with more than $49 million in federal funding.

The Authority’s Board of Directors and its leadership team thanked the delegation for its support.

“The Port of Mobile is a critical economic engine for the state of Alabama, and we are grateful to Alabama’s federal leaders for continuing to invest in our facilities and infrastructure,” said Zeke Smith, chairman of the Board of the Alabama Port Authority. “These projects don’t just benefit the Port and the customers we serve. They strengthen Alabama businesses, support thousands of jobs, and create economic opportunity in communities across our state.”

The more than $49 million secured in 2026 will help modernize facilities at the Port of Mobile, the Authority said. They said the improvements will position Mobile as “America’s Gulf Gateway.”

“Strong revenues are allowing us to reinvest in our facilities and operations, but federal support is critical to making the larger infrastructure investments needed to support sustained growth at the Port of Mobile,” Alabama Port Authority director and CEO Doug Otto said. “Our congressional delegation understands the impact the Port has on Alabama’s economy, and we appreciate their continued partnership and support.”

Approximately $38 million in federal funding supported dredging and beneficial use initiatives, $3.2 million went directly to a beneficial use site in Upper Mobile Bay, $2 million went to enhance freight rail connectivity and $2 million went to modernize the McDuffie Coal Terminal. More federal funds went to a future cargo facility and sedimentation study.
The Authority is currently expanding the container terminal, upgrading intermodal capacity and designing projects to increase global trade.

The Port of Mobile has generated $415 billion in economic impact across the state since 2019.
