As of Thursday, many southern counties were still in extreme drought, with part of southeastern Houston County at level 4 of 4, exceptional drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. However, the Drought Monitor did not include the rainfall amounts for Wednesday or Thursday.

A statewide fire alert issued last month by the Alabama Forestry Commission was still in effect.

The Forestry Commission has brought six wildfires in Alabama under control. There was only one active wildfire on Thursday in Coffee County.

In the past week, parts of Alabama have received up to four inches of rain. With more moisture heading into the southern part of the state, officials with the National Weather Service hope drought conditions will improve by the next update on May 14.
