Members of Alabama’s Republican House delegation helped President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” gain final passage in the House on Thursday after hours of debate and delay.
The bill now heads to Trump for his signature to become law.
U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) said the bill delivers the largest tax cut in history.
“President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill just PASSED - and it delivers the largest tax cut in history, funds the border wall, and strengthens our military,” Moore said. “Proud to stand with President Trump and fight for America!”
U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) said the bill keeps a promise to the American people.
“The One, Big, Beautiful Bill delivers on President Trump’s promises to the American people. It secures massive tax cuts for American families and businesses, complete border security, a supercharged economy, and accountability in taxpayer-funded programs, while reducing out-of-control government spending,” said Strong.
He continued, “From our space, defense, and manufacturing sectors to our working families, farmers, and small business owners — all of North Alabama will benefit from President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill."
U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) said, “Despite what many of my Democrat colleagues and the national news media have claimed, this bill does not remove children or veterans from Medicaid or food assistance.”
“What it does do is restore these vital programs to their original purpose — providing a safety net for the poor, pregnant women, children, and individuals with disabilities. The reforms we've made will help ensure that Medicaid remains focused on its core mission and continues to serve those who truly need it most. Not for able-bodied people who just don't want to work,” Aderholt said.
U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Prichard) voted against the bill, saying it was a “handout for the rich.”
“This bill is nothing more than a handout for the rich. Under this bill, on average, if you make $1 million, you get at least a $80,000 tax break each year,” Figures said. “That's nearly three times the median income in Alabama. If you make $50,000, on average, you get less than $250. Republicans claim they are the party of fiscal responsibility, but this bill adds trillions to our debt. If we are going to spend more money, it should be to help Americans across the country keep a roof over their heads, clothes on their backs, and food on their tables. It should be to give tax breaks to teachers and school personnel, nurses, social workers, law enforcement, firefighters, first responders, and everyday people. Instead, Republicans have abandoned the people who need help the most. This bill is bad for Alabama, bad for America, and there is nothing beautiful about it.”
