Huntsville resident and former State Rep. Douglas Van Hale passed away recently at the age of 83.

Hale, who was renowned for his "boundless energy and enthusiasm," will be laid to rest on Monday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville.

"Doug was a devoted public servant, trail-blazing political figure, engineer, attorney, and accomplished entrepreneur," read Hale's obituary. "Doug left his fellowship at MIT to return to Alabama to help build the Alabama Republican Party."

"In 1970, Doug was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, becoming the second Republican to hold state office in Alabama since Reconstruction, a testament to his pioneering spirit. Among his proudest legislative achievements was the passage of a landmark ethics bill, reflecting his dedication to personal character and good governance," his obituary added.

The former legislator's distinguished professional career was also noted.

"Doug was the President and CEO of Hale Properties, where he combined his legal expertise with entrepreneurial vision," the obituary remembered Hale. "His leadership and business acumen made a lasting impact on the Huntsville community. His kindness, faith, and lifelong commitment to service will continue to inspire all who knew him."

Hale's obituary referenced his love for life and adventure.

"A man of boundless energy and enthusiasm, Doug was active in every aspect of life - social, political, civic, and sporting. He loved boating, jogging, tennis, skiing, sailing, snorkeling, windsurfing, attending Air Shows, concerts, and traveling the world in search of adventure," it read. "Doug had a deep appreciation for nature, especially sunsets, often planning his days around the perfect view."

Steve Schmidt, chairman of the Madison County GOP, touted Hale’s accomplishments and legacy.

“Another giant has fallen. Doug Hale was a friend, an environmental activist conservative, strong community leader, and a faithful Christian,” Schmidt told 1819 News.

“He was a pioneer in the Republican party even as far back as the 70s when at the time it wasn't cool. He got elected to the legislature from Madison County back then and was the early driver on ethical reform in Alabama," he added.

“He was an active member in the Republican Party until the very end, serving on the local committee for over 55 years,” Schmidt added.

Doug is survived by his wife, Linda Evans Hale; daughter, Holly Anne Hale; sisters, Priscilla Beth, and Terry Hale Standridge (Jack); nephew, Jim Coman; and niece, Missy Coman. Doug was preceded in death by his parents and youngest sister, Susan Elaine “Susie” Hale.

Visitation was held on Monday at the First Baptist Church Chapel. The funeral service immediately follows.
