The recently released Club For Growth Foundation (CFG) scorecard showed an underwhelming performance for Alabama’s Republicans in implementing CFG’s “pro-growth” and limited government policies.

CFG grades lawmakers and states based on their votes on policy legislation. The group gives high marks for pro-economic growth and free-market policies that limit government, while giving negative marks for votes in favor of additional taxation or regulation.

The group comprehensively examined each lawmaker’s record on votes related to “pro-growth policies” and computed on a scale of 0 to 100. A score of 100% indicates the highest support for pro-growth policies.

As a reference, the foundation observed votes on several key issues, including school choice, general fund appropriations, corporate subsidies, property tax increases and more.

Senate Republicans barely outperformed House Republicans by scoring 37%, just one point above the House score of 36%.

State Sen. Tom Butler (R-Madison) was the Senate’s highest-rated Republican, receiving a score of 50%. State Sen. Vivian Figures (D-Mobile) received the highest Senate Democratic score of 13%.

The lowest rating for a Senate Republican was for State Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Atmore), with 25%. The lowest Democratic rating went to State Sen. Merika Coleman (D-Birmingham), who scored nil on the CFG scorecard.

“Despite being touted as one of the most conservative states in the country, lawmakers in Alabama consistently underperform when it comes to pro-growth, fiscally conservative economic policies,” said Club for Growth Foundation president David McIntosh. “To ensure future generations of Alabamans succeed, legislators must correct course and promote policies that will hold the government accountable and rein in spending.”

In the House, with an average Republican score of 36%, three lawmakers tied at 40% for the highest rating: State Reps. Jennifer Fidler (R-Silverhill), Troy Stubbs (R-Wetumpka) and Jerry Starnes (R-Prattville). State Rep. Tim Wadsworth (R-Arley) earned the lowest ranking of House Republicans, earning just 13%.

The highest-rated Democrat in the House went to 2024 freshman State Rep. Marilyn Lands (D-Huntsville), who scored 26%. The lowest-scoring Democrat was State Rep. Rolanda Hollis (D-Birmingham), coming in with just 5%.
