Since 1966, a non-profit organization in Alabama has been helping the state's youth get out of crises and go on to become successful, contributing members of society. The Alabama Sheriffs' Youth Ranches have taken in thousands of young people from across the state and have grown to build four specialized ranches.
The Baldwin County Boys Ranch, the FAME Colbert County Girls Ranch, the St. Clair County Boys Ranch and the Tallapoosa Girls Ranch welcome teens into the Christian, family-style residential homes each year.
The mission is to assist at-risk children and youth grow spiritually and physically. Caregivers watch over the children and put them into a structured environment that includes livestock care, farm chores, lawn care, church, devotionals, sports and clubs. They also learn the importance of pledging allegiance to the American flag.
"Ranchers" are provided with educational tools and tutoring, and the organization offers a college program. Participants are taught independent living skills to help them as they mature.
Those who have been given the opportunity to experience the ranch say they are thankful they were given the tools to become who they are today.
"I am very thankful for the [Colbert County Girls Ranch] and all that they've done for me," one graduate said. "It is just one big family - I love it. They have made me a better person by loving me as I am and allowing me to become the person they knew I was capable of becoming."
Last year, the program had five high school graduates and five who started college.
"Many are going on to attend college, several were on honor roll and are participating in various sports and extracurricular activities," said CEO Michael Smith. "They are so eager for upcoming school events like football games, dances, and club meetings.
The organization is sponsored by the Alabama Sheriffs Association and is funded by donations. There are also two fundraising golf tournaments in the fall and a bass fishing tournament.
