The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (American Board) received approval from the Alabama State Board of Education last week to offer alternative pathways for teacher certification in Alabama.
The program allows professionals from various industries to transition into education without requiring a return to a traditional university program.
The Alabama Legislature passed legislation in 2023 requiring the State Board of Education to approve alternative certification programs that have a strong national track record of preparing effective educators.
American Board, which has certified more than 20,000 teachers nationwide, received state board approval on Thursday.
"Right now in Alabama, we need programs that can quickly and effectively get teachers into the classroom, and I am looking forward to seeing the opportunities these programs will create,” State Rep. Terri Collins (R-Decatur) said.
State Rep. Susan DuBose (R-Hoover) said, "Great teachers are the heart of a strong education system, and alternative certification programs are proven options for ensuring Alabama classrooms are filled with passionate, skilled educators.”
“These programs provide a pathway for professionals from diverse backgrounds—whether industry experts, military veterans, or career changers—to bring their knowledge and experience into the classroom,” she added.
