Less than 48 hours after Nick Saban told his players he planned to retire, the search for his successor may already be over.

According to a report by ESPN, Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer is in the middle of contract negotiations to be the next Alabama football coach. If negotiations are successful, a buyout of $12 million would be owed to Washington.

DeBoer has been the head coach of the Washington Huskies for the past two years, leading them to impressive achievements. In his most recent season, DeBoer led the Huskies to a 14-1 record, winning a Pac-12 Championship and leading his team to the College Football Playoffs. His Huskies beat Texas in the semifinals before losing to Michigan in the National Championship Game.

During his two-year run with Washington, DeBoer won back-to-back Pac-12 Coach of the Year awards and 2023 AP Coach of the Year awards.

DeBoer began his head coaching career at Sioux Falls, an NAIA school, leading the team to a 67-3 record and three NAIA national titles over five seasons.

DeBoer worked his way up the ranks and finally got an FBS coaching job at Fresno State in 2020.

In 2022, DeBoer became Washington's head coach, leading the Huskies to a 25-3 record over his two-year stint.

As a head coach, DeBoer flaunts a 104-12 record overall and a 37-9 record at the FBS level.
