On this occasion, John was not working as a driver but as a spotter at a NASCAR race in Talladega, turn four. He happened to see a hero of his, famed driver Mario Andretti.
Here is the story in Johnny Williams' own words:
I remember a time at Talladega, I was working for NASCAR as a spotter in turn four. I was walking through the garage area and saw a hero of mine, Mario Andretti standing under a tent by himself.
Earlier in his life he wrote in a magazine, his Testimony about his walk with the Lord. He said that he would never let anger spill over into his racing life. He would go to the person he was at odds with and talk it out. It was my first time seeing him, and I wanted to tell him what that article meant to me. We talked for about 10 minutes, and shook hands when we parted.
Later I was walking out of the pits, and a lady that was sitting close to the spot where Mario and I were standing and talking. She stopped me and wanted to know what I had said to Mario, I did not think I should say, because to me it was personal.
But she told me why she had asked. She said whatever it was really hit him hard, because you could tell that it really shook him. He walked back to his motorhome and didn’t come back out for a long time. She told me that Mario and Bobby Rahall had been having problems for over a month, and it had gotten really bad lately.
Then it really hit me. I think that that time with him was a Divine appointment, because he needed to be reminded about that article he had written. I got excited about being the one God used to remind him of what he had said, and to know that it had an impact on another’s life.
You never know when you become the messenger that God uses to send a message to others. Thank you Jesus.
Mario Andretti’s testimony in a news article came back unexpectedly to help him in a time of need.
