Mysterious drone sightings in the Northeast have caused people nationwide to pay closer attention to the skies.

In South Alabama, reports of drones have been posted on social media for several days. While many say, “if those drones come to Alabama, they will be shot down,” officials warn against taking tactical action.

“I would caution people from shooting at aircraft which is a serious problem,” Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich told 1819 News.

While Alabama doesn’t have a law prohibiting the shooting of a drone, there are local laws that prohibit shooting firearms in certain places. Furthermore, the federal government does have laws prohibiting shooting drones. It is a felony violation to destroy or damage an aircraft, including unmanned aircraft.

Hellmich said there haven’t been any reports of drones in Foley, but one social media post was investigated.

“Our PD saw the social media post of the video from out in the county,” said Hellmich. “It was the opinion the video showed a military training helicopter like are normally seen in the area.”

If government officials are aware of the origin of the drones over New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and surrounding states, they are not revealing the source. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas offered extra federal services to authorities in New Jersey.
