A year after federal funding for public broadcasting stations was halted by the Rescissions Act of 2025, WLRH 89.3 FM/HD Huntsville has announced it will now focus on localized news topics.
Recognized as Alabama’s first public radio station on the air, WLRH has pledged a "renewed commitment to covering all things local," beginning on Monday.
Company leadership described the transition during WLRH's recent "State of the Station."
"We added more local voices, and not just staff, but also volunteers," said Erich Brukner, general manager. "We added new shows, and when I say more local voices, it's not just us putting our voices into the microphone, it's adding more voices from out in the community because now we have the ability to go out into the community, talk to more local leaders, nonprofit organizations, arts organizations, city and other local government entities to help them get the word out about things that are going on across North Alabama."
WLRH serves the northern counties of Alabama and several counties in southern middle Tennessee.
