Emma Robinson turned 111 years old on February 9. That makes her a supercentenarian, meaning over 110.

She was born Emma Tucker in LaFayette in Chambers County and now lives in the Goodwater Nursing Home.

Miss Emma was born on February 9, 1914, to parents Rufus and Pearlie Tucker in LaFayette. She received her education in Chambers County and obtained degrees in education from Alabama State University in Montgomery and Alabama A&M in Huntsville.

She actively participated in the civil rights movement, marching in Tuskegee and Montgomery. It was during one of the marches that she met Steven Robinson, who later became her husband. He was a minister, and the couple moved to Talladega, where he became pastor of Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church in Talladega’s Knoxville Community. She worked as a teacher in both the Talladega City and County School systems for 35 years. She continued teaching well into the 1970s before retiring to devote herself full-time to caring for her husband, who was in declining health. They did not have any children.

Even after her husband died, she remained independent, living on her own and driving herself well into her 90s. She stayed in her own house until she reached the age of 98, when she suffered an aneurysm.

She has lived through 20 U.S. presidents, starting with Woodrow Wilson. Can you name them? She can.
