Alabama lawmakers are applauding the Monday announcement by GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump to select U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his vice presidential nominee two days after surviving an attempted assassination.

Vance rose to prominence in 2016 with the release of his best-selling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," which subsequently became a hit film. The book detailed his upbringing, life in the Marine Corps and journey through Yale Law School. Vance was sworn into the U.S. Senate in 2023.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association. J.D.’s book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond….”

Many of Alabama’s state and federal lawmakers swiftly announced support for Trump’s VP pick, painting a bright picture for the pair as November draws nearer.

U.S. Sen Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) expressed admiration for the young senator's accomplishments in such a short career.

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) described Vance as her "good friend" and said he was "a tremendous voice for parents, families, and hardworking Americans."

U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) said he was "thrilled" with the pick.

U.S. Reep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks)

Alabama Senate Pro Tem Greg Reed (R-Jasper) tweeted his support for the ticket.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall called Vance an "excelent choice," describing spending time with him alongside Trump during a visit in New York.
