No. 18 Alabama took the season-long sweep against Samford with an 11-7 victory on Tuesday.
A three-run eighth inning broke a 7-7 tie to push the Crimson Tide past the Bulldogs. Alabama moves to 32-10 on the season and a perfect 12-0 in midweek games.
The Crimson Tide came into Tuesday’s final matchup against Samford looking to bounce back after dropping a weekend series against No. 7 LSU. Samford put up a nice fight as the Crimson Tide needed a late offensive surge in the eighth inning to pull out in front for good.
A 30-minute rain delay to start the game didn’t affect the Alabama offense as the Crimson Tide plated a pair of runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 4-1 lead. Samford responded in the third with some offense of their own, tying the game with a three-run third. Over the next two innings, Alabama tacked on another three runs before the Bulldogs responded yet again with another three-run inning in their half of the fifth to once again tie the game up. The Crimson Tide put together a three-run inning of their own in the eighth and that would be too much for the Bulldogs to overcome.
Will Hodo led the Alabama offense with a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI and a two-run home run in the second inning. Garrett Staton also smashed a two-run home run, finishing with two hits and two RBI.
Austin Morris came on in relief and pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out two and earning his third win of the season. The SEC leader in saves, Carson Ozmer, came into the game in the ninth in a non-save opportunity and struck out two of the final three batters to close the game.
No. 18 Alabama will host a weekend series with Missouri beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. The opening game will be televised on SEC Network.
