The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) awarded nine local airports grant funds from the state’s Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program.

More than $2 million will go to airports in Auburn, Eufaula, Florala, Huntsville, Jackson, Greenville, Monroe County and Limestone County.

“Local airports are critical to connecting our communities and supporting Alabama’s economy,” said Frank Farmer, bureau chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau. “This funding helps strengthen infrastructure, improve safety and support essential air services in all parts of the state.”

The funding program provides money and technical support for projects including land acquisition, runway upgrades, facility repairs, maintenance and operational improvements. ALDOT said it may also provide engineering support for projects as a means of investing in the state’s air transportation system.

Funding planning is already underway for 2027 airport projects. ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau met with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airports District Office earlier this year to identify funding priorities.

The Alabama Legislature approved an additional $15 million in funding for the past two years.
