Following weeks of calls for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) to release video of the officer-involved shooting death of Jabari Peoples, the state's lead investigator said in court documents that it could happen soon.
In a court affidavit, State Bureau of Investigations director Christopher Inabinett stated the footage is expected to be released on Friday.
"I am familiar with the progress of the Homewood Investigation to-date," Inabinett stated. "Based on my assessment of the current status of the Homewood Investigation, I expect that SBI will conclude its investigation by this Friday, August 1, 2025. At that time, pursuant to standard Agency practice following an officer-involved shooting investigation, ALEA will release SBI's investigative file - including any and all body-worn camera footage obtained from the City of Homewood- to the City of Homewood's Police Department and to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office."
Following the release to local authorities, the family would be allowed to view the footage.
The Homewood Police Department said the shooting of Peoples by the officer was in self-defense after the officer attempted to arrest Peoples. They claim Peoples knocked the officer to the ground and attempted to retrieve a firearm. City officials said the incident was clearly captured on the officer's body-worn camera and urged the state to release the video following protests and calls for boycotts.
