The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has released the identity of a man they say charged officers with a knife when they responded to a crash in Opelika Tuesday.
Around 2:30 p.m., Opelika Police responded to a multiple-vehicle crash on Interstate 85 near Exit 58. ALEA said Damion Laddal Jones, 33, of Easley, South Carolina, had a knife he refused to put down despite officers' commands. They said the suspect then charged towards them, prompting them to open fire.
Jones died on the scene.
Opelika PD contacted ALEA and requested that the agency investigate.
No word on Jones’ motive for charging officers has been released. ALEA said it would present the investigation findings to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office.
