The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating one of its own but refuses to release information about the incident or confirm the suspect is a State Trooper.

Jared Smith, 29, of Boaz, is charged with first-degree assault, according to court documents. An Etowah County grand jury indicted Smith.

Multiple local sources confirm Smith was a State Trooper at the time of the alleged incident. They say a motorcyclist was injured, but no further information has been provided.

The indictment states that Smith showed "extreme indifference to the value of human life, did recklessly engage in conduct which created a grave risk of death to another person and did thereby cause serious physical injury."

1819 News contacted ALEA multiple times over the past week and was told the agency is working on a press release. No press release has been sent.

Smith was booked into the Etowah County Jail on December 10. He posted a $10,000 bond and was released 20 minutes later.
