Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) chairman John Wahl plans to step down from his current role with the party if he decides to run for lieutenant governor in 2026.
Wahl said in an email sent to members of ALGOP’s State Executive Committee on Tuesday that he was still seriously considering a run for lieutenant governor.
“I wanted to reach out personally to let you know that I am seriously considering a run for Lieutenant Governor. This is not a decision I take lightly, and I am praying for wisdom and guidance. I believe that now more than ever, we need bold, conservative elected officials who are willing to stand for our platform and push back against lukewarm policies and the radical left-wing media. That is the kind of leadership I strive to provide,” Wahl said in the email.
“This is a difficult and bittersweet decision for me. I am excited about the prospect of furthering the Party’s values by running for Lieutenant Governor, but it does mean that I would plan to step down as Party Chairman. While I hope to stay involved with the State Party in some capacity, the bylaws are not entirely clear on whether a chairman taking a leave of absence would satisfy the requirements outlined in our standing rules.”
Wahl continued, “I’ve received a great deal of encouragement to run, but before making any final decision, I want to include you in this process. I deeply value the friendship, support, and wisdom of each SEC member. Your thoughts and prayers mean a great deal to me, and I would be truly grateful for your input and support as I consider this next step.”
Current Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth is term-limited from seeking re-election.
