U.S. Reps. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) and Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) are attacking both the Trump administration and federal authorities following the fatal shooting of a man in Minneapolis by a Border Patrol agent on Saturday.

According to Sewell, federal agents are being given permission to "kill with impunity" in what she called a "campaign of cruelty."

"The erosion of our hard-fought rights and freedoms is on full display in Minneapolis," Sewell wrote in an X post. "None of us are safe when masked federal agents are allowed to invade our neighborhoods, kill with impunity, and obstruct local authorities from investigating. The Trump Administration must immediately remove ICE from Minnesota and end this campaign of cruelty. My heart breaks for the family of Alex Pretti and the entire Minneapolis community."

"Every American who values freedom should be united in condemning this horrific and unnecessary tragedy," she added.

Figures also took to X, accusing law enforcement agents of starting the "physical confrontation" and shooting the man after he was already disarmed.

"What happened to Alex Pretti in Minnesota yesterday cannot be justified or tolerated," Figures wrote. "This should not be happening in this country. Masked law enforcement agents initiating a physical confrontation and then shooting a man after disarming him is completely insane. Seeing "leadership" immediately jump to conclusions to justify this shooting with no investigation is irresponsible and dangerous. Mr. Pretti should still be alive."

"This was another senseless killing of a US citizen that was 100% avoidable and unnecessary. People must be held accountable for what happened," concluded Figures.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said shortly after the shooting that its officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien who was wanted for violent assault when the incident occurred.

"During the operation, officers were approached by an individual with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun," DHS revealed. "Officers attempted to disarm the suspect, but the armed suspect violently resisted. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots."

"Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject, but was pronounced dead at the scene," added DHS.
