Recent polling shows former Alabama Republican Party chairman John Wahl with a substantial lead over his primary opponent, Secretary of State Wes Allen, in their upcoming runoff election for lieutenant governor in June.
The pair emerged as the leading candidates to succeed outgoing Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth in the Republican primary earlier this month.
Wahl led in the race, earning 40.6% of the vote (192,432), a slight margin over Allen’s 38% (180,292). The two will face one another in a June 16 runoff to determine who the party’s nominee will be in the November general election.
Recent poll results from AM Research Group now show Wahl with a 15-point lead over Allen heading into the runoff.
The poll measured 2,144 likely voters, 19.1% of whom were undecided. Of the decided voters, 57.7% picked Wahl, while 42.3% had Allen as their preferred candidate. When the undecided voters were taken into account, the numbers still show Wahl leading with 46.7% over Allen’s 34.2%.
The independent poll was conducted May 23-24 with a 3% margin of error.
Wahl led in all polled congressional districts, with his highest margin in Congressional District 3 at 63.8% and his lowest in Congressional District 2 at 50.3%.
