ANDALUSIA — Dr. Ben Carson emphasized trusting God, defending the unborn and living with courage in a Monday night speech to Sav-A-Life of Covington County’s annual banquet.

Sav-A-Life is a statewide pro-life ministry dedicated to “sharing Jesus to save lives.” Nearly 700 attended the sold-out event.

Carson praised the people of Alabama and stated, “When I was running for president, some of our biggest and most enthusiastic rallies were here in Alabama because people here have good, common sense.”

The world-renowned retired pediatric neurosurgeon and director of Housing and Urban Development during President Donald Trump’s first administration shared his journey from a fatherless, poverty-stricken home to the youngest chief of pediatric neurosurgery in the United States.

“Of all the countries in the world, America is the only one that has a dream,” he remarked. “My American dream was to be a doctor… There was one big problem with my journey to become a doctor… I was a terrible student… My nickname was dummy…”

Carson praised his single mother for her “tremendous faith in God,” and for always believing in him.

“She could say, 'Anybody can do anything. You can do it too, except you can do it better,'” he reflected.

After becoming a voracious reader at his mother’s urging, he “went from the bottom of the class to the top of the class” in one and a half years.

Reflecting on God’s providence in his medical career, Carson quoted Proverbs 3:5-6, stating, “Trust in the Lord in all your heart, and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.”

Carson described the horrific reality of mechanical abortions.

He explained, “You can actually see the little baby on the ultrasound screen. You see the little legs and the arms and the face, and all of a sudden you see an object come into the picture, and it’s trying to attach itself to the baby… Human beings with beating hearts, many times with mobility, who can feel pain, at least 15 weeks, maybe even earlier.”

"We like to talk about some of the ancient cultures and the barbaric things that they did with sacrificing children. Are we any better?" Carson asked. "I don't think so.”

Carson described American family renewal as critical to saving the country and the unborn.

He observed, “[Families] are not forming. People are not getting married. They're not producing children. In the '60s, the average birth per woman was 3.6. Today, the average birth per woman is 1.6… The Bible tells us that families are equipped, and they were established by God, one man, one woman… Why is it that so many ministers avoid these topics?”

Carson related, “When I was running for president, one of the things that really impressed me…is that most people had common sense, but what most people didn’t have is courage…”

He urged, “You may not be popular if you follow the will of God. Even if you're persecuted, how long are you going to be persecuted against the backdrop of eternity?”
