U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) received the American Farm Bureau Federation's (AFBF) “Outstanding New Member of Congress” award this week.
The award recognizes a member of Congress who is in, or has recently completed, their first term and is a good partner for agriculture. Recipients are chosen "for having a philosophy or record that demonstrates a commitment to sound agricultural policies supported by Farm Bureau, the private enterprise system, fiscal conservatism and reduced federal regulation of businesses and individuals."
“I’m honored to present the Outstanding New Member of Congress Award to Senator Katie Britt,” said AFBF president Zippy Duvall. “Her leadership is needed to help address the challenges facing America’s farmers and ranchers. With increasing uncertainty in farming caused by high supply prices, shrinking paychecks and the lack of a new, modernized farm bill, we need lawmakers like Senator Britt to continue working to create opportunities for America’s farmers and ranchers.”
In accepting the award, Britt vowed to continue fighting for farmers.
“I am honored to receive the ‘Outstanding New Member of Congress’ award from the American Farm Bureau Federation," she stated. "The importance of our family farmers and agricultural community cannot be overstated — American food security is critical to our economic security and national security. I am proud to be an unwavering champion for the hardworking men and women who tirelessly work to feed, fuel, and clothe America. I will continue fighting to ensure our farmers have the necessary resources and support to tend to their land for generations to come."
The Alabama Farmers Federation (ALFA) nominated Britt for the award, saying Alabama's junior U.S. Senator had "already proven herself to be a strong proponent of agriculture."
ALFA president Jimmy Parnell said, “Senator Britt is a rising star with a bright future in the U.S. Senate. She grew up in rural Alabama and has already proven herself to be a strong proponent of agriculture. Senator Britt understands that farmers must thrive for rural communities to survive. I believe there is no new member of Congress more deserving of this recognition than our friend Senator Katie Britt.”
According to AFBF, Britt was chosen because she "has been an outspoken advocate for farmers by supporting sensible environmental regulations, calling for labor reform and promoting agriculture as a profession for young farmers. She also cosponsored legislation to repeal the estate tax to ensure farmers and ranchers can pass their farms onto the next generation."
