Amtrak's new "Mardi Gras Service" route will begin on August 18.
City leaders and others from three states will gather Saturday to celebrate the return of the route between Mobile and New Orleans. Amtrak's leadership team and the federal, state and local officials who have supported the service will gather at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center for an inaugural run. There will also be a special presentation highlighting the shared history of Mardi Gras in Mobile and New Orleans.
The inaugural run will be the first since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 shut down the route.
There will also be connections in Bay Saint Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula.
Amtrak will operate under contracts with the states of Louisiana and Mississippi. It will receive financial support from Mobile and the backing of the Southern Rail Commission.
