A Florence man has been charged with second degree domestic violence after a nearly 12 hour standoff with local law enforcement over the weekend.

According to reports, Andre Dupree Foster, 51, was observed with a knife and firearm, trying to kill his wife on Saturday evening. A concerned caller at the scene notified the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office of the incident and deputies quickly responded.

After arriving at the residence on Westmead Lane, authorities worked to communicate with Foster and his wife. When contact was made, Foster declined to open the door and instead spoke with law enforcement through it, claiming he was suicidal and that he would not voluntarily leave the home.

Authorities grew increasingly concerned about the situation, when a single gun shot rang out from inside the house just after they had communicated with Foster. Their fears, however, were quieted when they learned that the wife had escaped and was taking shelter at a neighbor’s residence.

Foster peacefully surrendered to officers a short time later.

Limestone County Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin issued a statement regarding the standoff, praising the community and all first responders involved.

“I want to sincerely thank the community for their patience and understanding as we worked through this dangerous and complex situation overnight,” McLaughlin said.

“I am incredibly grateful for the teamwork and professionalism shown by everyone who responded," he added. "Thank you to the Athens Police Department, East Limestone Volunteer Fire Department, and Athens-Limestone EMS for their support and assistance.”

The sheriff also expressed his appreciation for Foster's family, who helped ensure the situation didn’t escalate.

“I would also like to thank Mr. Foster’s family for their cooperation, prayers, and help throughout the night. Because of everyone’s efforts, we brought this incident to a peaceful conclusion, and most importantly, without any loss of life,” McLaughlin added.

Foster is being held at the Limestone County Jail. As of Sunday, his bail has not yet been set.
